Well normally it isn't, but for Detroit Metal City that seems to be the case. It starts with a lead singer who wants to be a pop star, and add a masochistic stage groupie called, "Capitalist Pig." Finally, one cannot forget their female band manager who gets off on anarchy and destruction... that's just when things become interesting. I tried to keep spoilers light, but reader discretion is advised. Come on, read it. You'll like it...
The story follows the misadventures of Negishi Soichi (Krauser II), the vocalist and guitarist for the death metal band, Detroit Metal City (DMC). Negishi's ultimate goal is to become a trendy pop singer, and write love songs. As much as he doesn't like death metal, Negishi can not deny the rush he gets from performing, and this often pushes him to become more like the Krauser character. While Negishi is in the Krauser character, he portrays the "Demon King", a terrorist from hell. Krauser often sings about having killed and raped his parents, while assaulting the Capitalist Pig onstage. The Capitalist Pig is a middle-aged convenience store clerk, whose sole role in DMC is for Negishi to slap around during performances. Adding to Negishi's troubles of being part of DMC is Aikawa Yuri, Negishi's college friend and love interest. While at a record store Aikawa mentions that DMC's music is distasteful, and after Negishi agrees he is confronted by hardcore fans of DMC. Trying to defuse the angry group, he tells them that Krauser is a talented guitarist, but the group isn't convinced. They challenge Negishi by making him demostrate Krauser's technique. Agreeing to their challenge, he plays air guitar to their amazement and begins to get into the role of Krauser. Having his confidence grow due to the crowd's satisfaction, Negishi feels he is able to tell Aikawa he has a crush on her, but instead of letting her know, he calls her a whore in front of the crowd and Aikawa runs away crying. After this, things only get harder for Negishi: including assaulting the police, being hung during a concert, and his constant abuse from his band manager.
In addition to the Anime, there is a live action movie of Detroit Metal City. The movie is based on the anime, and was released during the same time. The movie is almost entirely a copy of the anime, except it only focuses more on Negishi and Aikawa and Gene Simmons plays Jack ill Dark. I will say that the animation of Detroit Metal City is not all that great. Each episode only lasts about 13 minutes, and the series is 12 episodes long. Someone could watch the entire series in under 3 hours. While the anime doesn't take its self seriously and can be funny, the plotline is scatter-brain. I should probably also mention that Detriot Metal City, is almost like the Japanese version of Dethklok. There are different bands who release songs and albums under the DMC name. So if you are looking for a change of pace, and something funny, you should definitely give Detriot Metal City a try.
