I tried to keep this to a minimum with spoilers...
FullMetal Alchemist focuses on Edward and Alphonse Elric (Ed and Al) two brothers who learn alchemy at a young age by reading their father's books, who left their home when they were younger. Not to long after starting to learn alchemy their mother passes away due to an illness cause by an epidemic. The Brothers stumble upon the taboo of human transmutation which is rumored to bring someone back to life. During the transmutation of their mother, everything goes wrong due to the fact that they are not able to create a human soul using alchemy. Ed loses his left leg, and Al's entire body is broken down and vanishes. Ed awakes to see a distorted carcass in the form of what should of be the transmutation of his mother. Noticing that all that is left of Al was the clothing he was wearing, Ed uses alchemy and sacrifices his right arm to attach his brother's soul to a suit of armor. Due to Ed losing his arm and leg, He and Al visit their friend Winry Rockbell who is an automail engineer, to receive an automail arm and leg. Roy Mustang comes to Winry's home to advise Ed to become a State Alchemist in hopes to recover their bodies. Ed and Al train their alchemy and ultimately Ed becomes a State Alchemist with the title " FullMetal ". From there Ed and Al go in search for the Philosopher's Stone (No we did not just cross into Harry Potter...) So Ed can help recover Al's body.
That is pretty much the basis of the series, and from there you are along for the journey, and some back story. Though I have never read the manga, I am hoping that this adaption does stay true to the subject matter. If you enjoyed the original FullMetal Alchemist, I would give this adaption a try, As of last weekend we are up to episode 6. Funimation bought the rights to series, and is offering the Japanese version of the show with English subs for view on their website. Funimation has been consistent with adding episodes everything Thursday.
I think this anime is actually pretty good, I am usually interested in anime like Gantz, and Elfin Lied but I thought I'd give FMA a try, and I really enjoyed every bit of it. In fact towards the end of the series I was, swapping out disks as fast as humanly possible, because I was so drawn in to the story. I wrote this review to help push the new series, but if you haven't seen the first series, you should definitely give it a try.
